01. Colombo ( Central Business Region)

  • Galle Face Green is located in the heart of the city along the Indian Ocean coast and is a destination for tourists and residents alike. 
  • The Galle Face Hotel is a historic landmark on the southern edge of this promenade.
  • Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important temples in Colombo. 
  • The temple's architecture demonstrates an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture.
  • The Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) is an urban park located next to the National Museum of Colombo and the Town Hall. 
  • It is the oldest and largest park in Colombo and features a large Buddha statue.
  • As part of the Urban Regeneration Program of the Government of Sri Lanka, many old sites and buildings were revamped into modern public recreational spaces and shopping precincts. 
  • These include Independence Memorial Hall Square, Pettah Floating Market and Old Dutch Hospital, among others.


02. Galle & Down South




  • Important landmarks of the Southern Province include the wildlife sanctuaries of the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks. 
  • Ussangoda in Ambalantota is a panoramic view of the beach and the sea, and the holy city of Kataragama, and the ancient cities of TissamaharamaKirinda and Galle. (Although Galle is an ancient city, almost nothing survives from before the Portuguese invasion.) 
  • During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man.



03. Ancients Cities of Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa.

  • Sri Lanka's history dates back to more than 2500 years. 
  • These ancient cities and their glorious remains that are temples, fortresses, statues and irigation feats still have the ability to make people gaze at them with reverence. 
  • Ancient sites are considered to be archeological gold mines because they are evidence to a very rich civilization. 
  • Most of the places are declared as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. 
  • The oldest and the largest ancient city is Anuradhapura.

  • Anuradhapura is one of the ancient cities in Sri Lanka, well known for its ruins depicting early Sri Lankan civilization. 
  • It is very famous among Buddhists pilgrims. Anuradhapura was earlier the capital of the Island (in ancient times) and most of the Kings who ruled Sri Lanka resided in this vast city. 
  • The city is now named as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

  • Polonnaruwa is the Island's 2nd largest kingdom. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned Archeological relic sites in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom's first rulers.
  • Its beauty and serenity was captured in the Duran Duran music video Save a Prayer in 1982. 
  • The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. 
  • The Lankathilaka temple and a colossal statue of the Buddha made from stone is located here.



04. Kandy & Central Highlands.

Kandy Ancient City

  • Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka and lies in the midst of hills. 
  • It is the Capital of the Central Province. 
  • It is both an administrative ad religious city. 
  • Kandy is the second largest city in the country and is frequently visited by Buddhists especially of the Theravada School.

  • Kandy is very famous among tourist for three main reasons: It is home to the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic ; Dalada Maligawa ), The Botanical Gardens ( Located in Peradeniya) and it always has a special place when it comes to festivities such as the Esala Perahara.



05. Northern Province

 

  • The Northern province is one of  the nine in Sri Lanka. 
  • It is surrounded by the sea on three sides and one by land. 
  • There are many beautiful sandy beaches in the area. 
  • The beaches are a nice source of witnessing the beautiful sunrise and sun – set with spiraling waves of the sea. 
  • Neighboring provinces are the Eastern, the North central and North West. 
  • The Northern province with almost flat land has a landscape offering you a greeny appearance from the vast stretch of paddy lands. 
  • The day to day needs of the people are adequately met by cereals and different kinds of vegetables grown in the Yala season. 
  • The water needed for agriculture is available through rains and from the reservoirs found in the catchment area, and mainly from underground water taken from the wells. 
  • The water is taken for cookingdrinking and bathing and also for washing clothes. 
  • Water is traditionally linked with the life of the people of the area.
